To commemorate the 90th anniversary of La Salle College, we were commissioned to curate and design the school’s permanent Heritage Centre. The centre serves not only as a tribute to the past but also as an educational space for future generations—helping new students understand the values of La Salle within the broader context of Hong Kong’s history.

Working closely with a group of passionate alumni volunteers from diverse fields, we quickly identified a central theme: the enduring “Lasallian spirit.” This intangible yet powerful idea became the heart of our design and curation. We asked a bold question—“What is the Lasallian spirit?”—and let that guide the visitor journey.

Making the Intangible Tangible
To express the abstract concept of the “Lasallian spirit,” we structured the exhibition around key decision points in the school’s history. These turning points were designed as interactive prompts that encourage visitors to reflect and engage:
Why build a school in then-remote Kowloon in 1932?
Should the old campus be preserved despite costly upkeep, or be rebuilt?
By putting visitors in the shoes of past decision-makers, the exhibition invites empathy and deeper understanding of the school’s enduring values.

To better connect with today’s students, we prioritised simplicity and engagement:
- Information is presented in bite-sized formats. Minimal use of screens encourages focus and reduces digital distraction
- The analogue-first setup promotes organic conversations and peer interaction

A Living Archive for the Future
Anticipating ongoing donations of school artefacts, we built an expandable archival system. Key features include:
- A clearly defined SOP for receiving, cataloguing, and acknowledging artefacts
- Collaboration with teachers and students to ensure long-term maintenance
- Custom-built display cabinets, arranged in 5-year intervals from 1932 to present
- Visual clarity, historical continuity, and space for future additions
